During a re-trial this week , prosecutors said Denise Gay, along with her daughter Latoya Gay, suffocated Coles in his room, on March 12, Attorneys said that Denise and Latoya Gay drugged Martre before he began work on creating a plaster mask, aiming to gain acceptance into an arts university. Denise Gay's then year-old daughter testified that she saw her mother and older sister suffocating Coles with the mask, as she peeked into his bedroom door. The girl said she heard Coles yelling, "Get off me. As she looked into his room, she saw her mom and older sister sitting on top of him with something white on his face, describing a struggle. The girl also said she saw Latoya Gay later pushing a "green" bin, never seeing Coles again.

This was the second murder trial for Gay, who is Jurors in December convicted her and her year-old daughter, LaToya, of conspiring to murder Martre Coles, but they deadlocked on whether those two actually killed him in March Coles was found stuffed in a storage container in an industrial area of eastern Henrico less than a month after he disappeared. Prosecutors said Denise Gay carried out an elaborate, monthslong scheme to trick Coles into thinking he was attending a Florida art school, a fake application which included Coles creating a face mask.

Since March 12, loved ones have been searching frantically for Coles. His girlfriend, Ashlyn Knight, said she talked to him that day and that Coles was getting help from his father's girlfriend, Denise Gay, on a project for an art school in Florida. The family says a missing persons report was filed with Henrico Police.
Denise Gay, 49, was sentenced to life in prison, while her daughter, LaToya Gay, 23, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in connection to the killing. LaToya was sentenced to 20 years for first-degree murder and 10 years for conspiracy to commit murder. Coles, a Highland Springs High School graduate, was found April 2, in a plastic storage container stashed behind an electrical box in eastern Henrico.
